A Canadian Armed Forces member, Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, has died while on deployment in Latvia. The Department of National Defence confirmed his death near Riga on Thursday, with an ongoing investigation into the circumstances. Halmagean, originally from Hamilton, had served for nearly three years and was based in New Brunswick.
The Canadian forces are in Latvia as part of Operation Reassurance, NATO’s effort to deter Russian aggression in Eastern Europe. This was Halmagean’s first overseas deployment. The cause of death has not been disclosed, but officials stated there is no increased threat to other deployed members.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and military leaders expressed condolences, highlighting the sacrifices of military life. Latvia hosts a multinational NATO brigade, with Canada leading the deployment. The mission was recently prolonged until 2029, underscoring its strategic importance.
